Happy Harvey Wallbanger Day!
A Twist on a Classic π
RECIPES
I didn't know how many commemorative drink days there were until recently! It is a ton, which brought me to the conclusion that everyone is looking for an excuse to drink!
Here's yours for today!
The Harvey Wallbanger was created by a Hollywood bartender by the name of Duke Antone as early as 1952! It became a hit in the 70s, and although it has dimmed in popularity and been overtaken by its sister the Screwdriver (likely because Galliano isn't available at every bar), it will always remain a classic of the modern world. Cocktail writer Robert Simonson believes that it was originally called "Duke's Screwdriver", but the name was changed by Galliano to make it more marketable.
A drink that peaked during the disco age, and stayed around longer than others of its time, I'm sure grandparents have been boring their children with stories about it for years!
I wanted to change up the classic aesthetically, and I only needed one ingredient to do it: blood orange juice!
Blood oranges have a slightly different profile than navel oranges. They have an almost raspberry-like flavour in addition to the citrus. They are both tarter and sweeter than the navel orange, and juicier to boot. Although they are easy to find their juice is not. If you can't find a bottle of their juice, you can do what I did! Buy a few and juice them by hand! This can get expensive however because of how many you actually need to make ONE GLASS of juice (about 5 for me: 1 oz per orange). Another option I prepared for was using a sparkling blood orange drink since these are easier to find! Both San Pellegrino and Brio make them (San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa and Brio Aranciata Rossa), and they are easy to find in most grocery stores!
Ingredients:
- 5 oz blood orange juice or sparkling blood orange drink
- 1.5 oz vodka
- 0.5 oz Galliano
Glass: 10-12 ozHighball
Garnish: Orange wheel, wedge, or peel
Build: mixed
Directions:
1. Place your highball glass on the counter and pour your juice or soda into the glass
2. Top with ice to the top of the glass.
3. Pour the vodka over the ice.
4. Float your Galliano at the very top of the drink.
5. Enjoy, and if you try this make sure to tag @atwistoflemoncocktails on Instagram so I can see your great work!
